SERVICES & SERMONS

At Church of the Advent, we worship in a traditional liturgical format.

Whether you are well-versed in Anglican liturgy or completely new to this way of worship, you will find our services easy to follow. We hope you find us a place where you can enter more fully into the worship of Jesus Christ.

A SIMPLE OVERVIEW OF OUR SERVICE

An Anglican worship service typically includes the reading of scripture, chant and singing, candles, priestly vestments - or robes - a short sermon or homily, and the celebration of Communion where we partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is standing, sitting, and kneeling. All or most of the text, music and congregational directions are printed for anyone to follow along.

ADDRESS & PARKING

On Sundays we meet at 20 Front Street, a small music venue in downtown Lake Orion. There are a few parking spaces on Front Street, and many more in two large municipal parking lots on either side of the building.

WHAT TO WEAR

At Church of the Advent, it's all about authenticity and worship on Sundays. Most of us dress casually and for comfort. You might see some wear a head covering or take off their shoes for Communion, but there is no pressure to conform in this group!

WHAT TO BRING

You could walk in from the street to Church of the Advent, not knowing a thing about Anglicanism, and have everything you need handed to you to be able to follow and participate in our service.

COFFEE & COMMUNITY

No Anglican service would be complete without a coffee hour! Church of the Advent is fortunate to be able to use 20 Front Street's adjoining coffee house, Shaded Bloom, as our gathering place. There is always coffee served immediately after our service, often with vintage vinyl on the speakers and other delicious treats. This is where we build community and share each others' lives every week

ENGAGING SPIRITUAL GROWTH
IN OUR CHILDREN

Two things are important to us for our children: that they be full participants in the life of the church and the service of Eucharist (Communion), and that they be engaged with the message of the gospel and the teachings of the church. So we make sure they spend a good portion of the service with the adults, and that they take communion if they are baptized. They spend a short, but fun time learning about the week's scripture lesson and usually doing a craft - giving mom and dad a break and a chance to hear the sermon! Occasionally, we pause Sunday school to help our children build towards understanding and engaging with the full, Holy Communion service.

KID'S SUNDAY SCHOOL

Our Sunday school is run on a volunteer basis. Each lesson is coordinated by one of our dedicated mothers and facilitated by teams of moms, dads and other adult caregivers, each week. Kids meet in the coffee hour space, or, when the weather is good, outside at one of the picnic tables. Occasionally, we pause Sunday school to help our children build towards understanding and engaging with the full, Holy Communion service.

SUNDAY SCHEDULE

HOLY COMMUNION

  • Every Sunday from 10 - 11:15am

  • Coffee Hour from 11:15am-12:30pm

  • The Litany (Service of communal prayer and petition) from 9:30 - 9:45am

KIDS' SUNDAY SCHOOL

  • Kids' Sunday School from 10:30 - 11am*

(Children begin and end the morning in the main, Holy Communion service)

*Note: We are temporarily pausing Sunday school, so we can redesign how we engage our children in the faith in a meaningful way. During this time, children will be in the service, along with the rest of the congregation. If needed, the coffee hour room has craft supplies, etc., if your child needs a few minutes away from the service.

NOTE: 20 Front Street is a multi-use facility. So, outside of Sunday mornings, please email Fr. Shaun LaDuc to get in-touch with us (fr.shaunladuc@gmail.com), as the church is physically on-site at 20 Front Street only during Sunday morning services

IN ADDITION TO SUNDAYS

Church of the Advent is a young, vibrant, and active parish full of community-builidng opportunities. During the week, we meet regularly at people's homes for Bible study, midweek services, Evening prayer, and other social gatherings just for fun. There are many ways to get involved and find community here.
